What is VO2max?
VO2max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise – measured in ml of oxygen per kg of body weight per minute.
Why does it matter?
VO2max is one of the strongest predictors of longevity and quality of life. Higher fitness levels are directly linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and all-cause mortality.
How to improve it
For most people, any kind of physical activity will improve their fitness. However, interval training – alternating high-intensity effort with recovery – is the most effective method. Your genes also play a role; some people naturally find it easier to reach a higher VO2max.
VO2max is not just a fitness number – it is one of the most powerful biomarkers for how long and how well you will live. VO2max naturally declines by about 10% per decade after the age of 30, but regular aerobic exercise slows this significantly. Investing in your fitness is one of the best health decisions you can make – and even daily brisk walks make a difference.
